Skills and Training
Given the growing inward and outward investment in China and the presence of large international law firms in China, this programme will provide students with a unique opportunity to develop key skills in international commercial law with a unique focus on clinical legal skills.WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
The programme is a dual-award programme and successful students will receive two degrees: one from Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL) and one from Coventry University. This dual award is studied across two countries – China and the UK – and cultures, which will provide you with competitive advantage when seeking employment.
The first three years of the programme are taught at SWUPL’s campus, located in Chongqing, where students will undertake modules delivered by SWUPL teaching staff as well as staff from Coventry University. Having successfully completed the first three years, you can then choose to spend your fourth and final year of study in the UK studying at Coventry University.
Academic programmes are taught in both Chinese and English at SWUPL and, on successful completion of the course, we aim for you to be able to demonstrate an English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5. Read more information about the course here.
SWUPL and Coventry University both offer a range of student services, including English language teaching, academic writing and career counselling, to support you through your studies.
To work in the UK and to take on an internship, international students will be subject to visa restrictions. The International Student Support team can provide advice and information on how to apply for visas, pre-arrival information and will help you with any concerns you have whilst studying in the UK. You can find out more about the support for international students here.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The LLB Commercial Law programme aims to enhance the commercial law knowledge of students. The content of the course aims to give students the practical skills to be able to pursue an international law career.
Commercial Law LLB final year, taught at Coventry University
The emphasis of the year in Coventry will be on providing students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in international commercial law issues and to gain first-hand work experience in the United Kingdom through a voluntary non-paying internship with a law firm, in-house legal department, governmental agency or the judiciary. The following modules are taught in Coventry during the final year:
Transactional Practice Skills: Negotiation and Legal Drafting
This module will ensure that non-native speakers of English understand sophisticated spoken and written legal English with an emphasis on exposing students to English contract law as well as the principles and nuances of drafting contracts. There will be an examination of mediation, arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution to expose students to the different types of methods and techniques of communication used to resolve disputes.
This module explores the meaning of corporate personality, and examines the nature, types and functions of companies, the consequences of incorporation and its practical advantages and disadvantages, the formation and flotation of companies, and the nature and classification of company securities, shares and debentures.
International Commercial Law
This module explores international commercial law scholarship in real depth, examining topics such as the Sales of Goods Act, the carriage of goods by sea and by air, and road, rail and marine insurance for cargo, along with contractual and non-contractual obligations and civil and commercial jurisdictions.
Legal Risk Management, Governance and Compliance
This module explores how effective legal risk management and compliance is a now a central component of sound governance in the public, private and non-profit sectors. You will examine how the corporate governance debate has moved from corporate social responsibility to organisational responsibility. At the heart of our studies will be an examination of the “AAA” formula of successful legal risk management and compliance essential for any organisation: appreciation, architecture and assurance.
Internship students will be placed in a non-paying internship whereby they will gain first-hand legal work experience in the UK with a law firm, barristers’ chambers, in-house legal department, a governmental agency, the judiciary or at Coventry Legal Advice Service (CLAS). Note that the number of hours a student may work during his or her studies in the United Kingdom, including doing an internship, is limited by the United Kingdom Border Agency.
Intellectual Property Law
This module explores the legal rules that protect the intellectual property rights, including trademarks, copyright and patents.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?
Topics are normally delivered through large group lectures and seminars of 12 students. Seminars are interactive and many involve hypothetical problem questions, case studies and the analysis of more theoretical issues. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress and will be available for advice."
