This course runs in 2016/17.

This professional course will enable you to make real changes to the lives of people with learning disabilities, one of the most marginalised and vulnerable groups in society. It is designed to equip you with a range of transferable skills that helps enable you to work across health and social care services.


The course actively engages with people with learning disabilities, their families and carers. A high level of commitment to learning from service users is reflected in their direct involvement in many aspects of the curriculum. In addition to an Honours degree, on successful completion of this course you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditor's standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.


This course will provide you with key knowledge and competencies to work effectively as a learning disability nurse across health, social care and independent settings. You will learn the value of people with learning disabilities as equal citizens and people who have a real contribution to make to your development as a caring professional nurse in this unique field of practice.

You will study and develop specialist skills in communication, comprehensive health assessment, equality and issues related to professional practice.

Evidence informed practice, public health and policy along with legal and ethical issues will build on generic topics which will be applied to this specific field of practice.

There is an emphasis on using research to enhance and improve services. You will develop an appreciation of advocacy and autonomous practice towards the end of the course. You will also study complex health needs; profound and multiple needs, care packages and therapeutic approaches to service users with learning disability, their families and carers.

To reflect the changes in the health professions, this course could be subject to change as developments are notified to the University.


Your course will be based on a series of interactive lectures, with associated seminars, workshops and practical classes. You will be engaged in a wide range of interesting teaching and learning activities making the challenges of learning more enjoyable. In addition, your academic personal tutor provides support and advice from day one, assists in the transition into higher education and will review and discuss your progress with you regularly throughout the full three year course.


An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examination 8%; coursework 42%; assessments within practice placements 50%.


While on placement you have 40 hours per week, over at least 20 weeks which accounts for 50% of the course. In a typical teaching week it is expected that you will have approximately 21 contact hours (classroom, online etc) and this will break down as:

Medium group teaching: 10 hours of workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 11 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 14 hours each week researching, revising and personal studying
