Though often experienced, well meaning and hard working, many care home staff are largely task-focused. Tasks prevent them from having meaningful engagement with their residents, especially those with dementia. Apart from pressures imposed by management, fear of deeper engagement can also be at the root. Sometimes staff may busy themselves with tasks specifically in order to avoid engagement with their residents.Through a series of linked exercises, reflection and discussion, staff are introduced to and practise a range of interactive techniques that enhance their dementia awareness and improve their relational, empathic engagement, active listening skills. The techniques help learners understand that all dementia care is about connecting meaningfully and encourage deeper understanding of how the world might seem from the perspective of a person with dementia, who may become increasingly isolated through their dementia journey.
