The Diploma in Medical Interpreting consists of two modules, the DPSI: Foundations (TRA2021) and the DPSI: Medical specialisation (TRA3022).

The 15 credit Foundations module (TRA2021) is designed for students who are new to the discipline of interpreting and translation. It is a Spring term module and runs from January to June each year.

The 30 credit Medical specialisation module (TRA3022) builds on the foundations laid in the TRA2021 module and teaches you the skills you need to work as a medical interpreter. This 30 credit module runs from October to April/May. In addition to preparing you to graduate with an undergraduate level interpreting and translation qualification, the module prepares you for the (Chartered) Institute of Linguists Educational Trust) Diploma in Public Service Interpreting, health option.

Students who graduate with an exit score of between 1 and 5 on the University 20 point scale can register on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) without the need for further examinations.

Students with 100 hours of accredited interpreting experience, holders of the Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting or with an academic background in languages can apply to be considered for direct entry into the TRA3022 module.
