Many aspects of how we understand science has evolved dramatically over the past 100 years or so. Biological and Chemical Sciences is a course designed to equip our graduates with a wide range of key skills and a knowledge base that are integral to a wide range of differing disciplines within science.
One aim of the course is to ensure our graduates have a good solid understanding of popular areas of science such as microbiology, genetics, cell biology, human physiology and biochemistry/chemistry, whilst developing integral practical skills associated with these areas.WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
The breadth of the course reflects the blurring of boundaries between the different sciences and has been designed to provide students with a range of skills and knowledge that is necessary in today’s multidisciplinary community environment. One aim of the course is to ensure you will leave with a good solid understanding of popular areas of science such as microbiology, genetics, cell biology, human physiology and chemistry, whilst developing integral practical skills associated with these areas.WHAT WILL I LEARN?

On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
• The Fundamentals Biological and Chemical Sciences – including biology, chemistry and physiology. You will develop your core understanding within the sciences, with a particular focus on the application of fundamental scientific principles within analytical industries. At this level you will also develop a critical appreciation of Biological and Chemical Sciences to enable them to develop practical skills in a range of scenarios;
• Human Anatomy and Physiology – you will be given an understanding of human physiological and anatomical systems and apply knowledge to complex principles that dictate physiological functions. At this level you will also develop critical analysis of a variety of human systems and the diseases that affect them, which will be underpinned by current research and thinking in these areas;
• Chemical Composition and Analysis – you will be introduced to fundamentals of inorganic, physical and organic chemistry, electronic structure, bonding and periodicity. This will include examining properties of chemical substances and specifically related to s, p and d-block elements and will look at the underlying principles of carbon chemistry and radiation processes. At this level there will be a major focus on comparing and analysing analytical techniques and applying them to real life case studies, based on organic and inorganic materials;
• Health & Disease issues – you will be introduced to basic pharmacological principles and drugs used to treat a range of diseases and gain a developed understanding and critical analysis of the complex pathophysiology and aetiological causes of a variety of topical diseases, whilst observing the clinical signs and symptoms used to diagnose these disorders;
• Cell & Molecular Biology – you will study eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell structure whilst beginning to explore bacterial diversity and emerging antibiotic strains with the application of this knowledge to a number of emerging applications of molecular techniques within the area of gene technology;
• Project Management – you will gain an applied knowledge of small-scale investigations, integrating some principles of project management and the associated processes. At this level you will also undertake an independent investigative project, using principles of project management and knowledge of health and safety and ethical procedures.HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?
This course will be taught through a variety of methods – lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning, textbooks, module webs, scenario-based learning sets, professional libraries and resources, journals and casestudies, seminars, discussion forums and peer-to-peer learning.HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Assessments will take the form of individual and group coursework, which is vocationally relevant. The wide range of assessment techniques used at Coventry University Scarborough Campus will ensure that you have every opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in full.
We have less examinations and more coursework, presentations and case study based assessment which try to mimic work placements and employability establishments. Assessments take place during and at the end of each six-week block.TEACHING CONTACT HOURS
As a full-time student a normal learning block will mean that you get 18 hours of teaching each week in groups of approximately 25-50 students. Depending on the course you have chosen, you will attend morning (9.00-13.00) or afternoon (14.00-18.00) sessions. You will also need to attend one two-hour tutorial each week."
