Michele Acciaro is Assistant Professor of Maritime Logistics at the Kühne Logistics University – Wissenschaftliche Hochschule für Logistik und Unternehmensführung (THE KLU) – effectively from the 1st of January 2013. Until December 2012 he held the position of Senior Researcher – Green Shipping at the Research and Innovation department of Det Norske Veritas AS (DNV) in Høvik, near Oslo. Between 2004 and 2010 he worked as deputy director and researcher at the Center for Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL)/Erasmus SmartPort of Erasmus University Rotterdam, with which he is still associated.

Logitics and Transportation Management

Sebastian Kummer is Head of the Institute of Transport and Logistics bei Vienna University of Economics and Business. His research focuses on logistics management, supply chain management, Logistics and supply chain performance measurement as well as on transport management and economy, economical analyses of transport infrastructure and services. He works as a consultant and management trainer for companies and government bodies. He is member if several scientific and company boards.

Successful companies are using modern transport management as a competitive advantage. With increasing globalization, rising energy prices, growing safety, security and ecological regulations optimizing goods transport becomes more and more important. In five days the International Autumn School Transport Management gives managers from industry, retailing, and transport companies the opportunity to learn from leading experts in academics and industry.

Participants will learn about the development of the European Unions Transport Policy. We will address management issues arising in all transportation modes and participants will learn to use effective and efficient transport management tools that will help them make better strategic, tactical and operational transport management decisions. In case studies the participants will learn best practice in transport planning, transport law and transport controlling. This International Summer School will not only give new insights, but also should help the management and the company to make their transport management smarter.

The Autumn School, taught in the vibrant harbor city of Hamburg, Germany, also presents a unique opportunity for program attendees to network with other logistics professionals in a setting rich in logistics history.

Transport Management:Key Business Processes

The course starts with the presentation of effective and efficient transport management as a key successfactor for Logistics and Supply Chain Management.The participants will learn the newest developmentsin transport policy, transport markets and transportcosts. Next, the key business processes of transportmanagement will be discussed. The participants willlearn about proven and innovative measures andtools for the most important processes. To deepenexisting knowledge, develop new insights and directlyaddress practical questions, the participantswill be required to prepare a case study.

International Transport and integrated Transport Chains


In the global economy optimizing internationaltransport chains is an ongoing task. Participants will receive a short introduction to the techniques, businessmodels and costs of sea and air transport. Asair and sea transport are the main battlefields of internationalsafety and security measures, we will discussthe major regulations and how companies canefficiently cope with them. New international transportlaw and contract issues as well as risk managementand security will be presented and appropriatestrategies and measures for responding to them willbe discussed. We will also visit the Port of Hamburg.

Transport Planning and Optimization


Modern transport planning starts with strategic transport planning. The participants will learn thetheory behind transport planning and the practicalapplication of this theory through a case studythat allows them to analyze transport flows usingpowerful tools. They will develop an understandingof the important role that Graphical Information Systems(GIS) play in transport planning. After finishingthis module participants should be able to developdifferent transport scenarios, perform optimizationstudies of these scenarios and prepare practical decisionsbased on these studies.

Transport execution, outsourcing, tendering


Transport managers deal with transport executionissues every day. However, many changes have occurredsince Internet services have been introducedand this has led to new tools and business opportunitiesin transport management. The module willprovide you with an update on the latest developmentsand will discuss advantages and disadvantagesof different transport execution modes as wellas latest trends in outsourcing. In this module theparticipants will learn how to make successful transporttenders, last, but not least, the participants willlearn the newest ideas and approaches to transportcontrolling.

Managerial skills


Within this interactive workshop participants willdevelop their managerial skills in the context of leadingsuccessful negotiations. The objective of theworkshop in negotiation skills is to enable participantsto achieve win-win outcomes in negotiations.By means of role play exercises, advanced conceptsof successful negotiations will be trained.
