The first five years of life are critical in children's development. There is clear evidence that high quality education and childcare during these years has a powerful impact on children as they prepare for later life. The Government is committed to raising the quality of early years provision by encouraging graduate leadership. To support this development and to give every child the best possible start in life, the Government has reviewed the training for professionals working with this age group. Building on the strengths of the Early Years Professional Status programme, from September 2014, the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) is working with accredited ITT providers to deliver the Early Years Initial Teacher Training.

Professional skills tests
The professional skills tests for trainee teachers are intended to ensure all teachers have a good grounding in the use of numeracy and literacy in the wider context of the professional role of the teacher, regardless of their specialism or intended teaching age range. The same expectations have to be met by all potential trainees, regardless of their previous qualifications.
