The seminar is mainly based on interaction and small groups, using problem-solving learning. It is an absolute must for every therapist working with children or practicing tuina!

Children naturally have a yang and lively nature. Compared to yang, "children's yin is insufficient" (xiao er yin bu zu 小儿阴不足). They are exuberant and easily become impulsive and hot-headed. Children that have difficulty to sleep or to be calm have their yin and yang qi unbalanced. The yin qualities of quietness, concentration, inwards movement, receptivity, and softness are disturbed by an excess of yang, expressed as movement, expansion and heat. We have to "calm shen, stabilize zhi" (anshen dingzhi 安神定志) and to understand why shen is agitated, misted or unstable to choose the best therapeutic principles.

The first day we will focus on the understanding of hyperactive children through the lens of Chinese medicine, putting an emphasis on the discussion of shen in children. We shall discuss roots and pathogenic processes, examine the main clinical patterns, evaluate possible treatments, and look at different traditional techniques.

In our discussions we shall take into consideration children who, according to their age, may be agitated, restless, always moving; impulsive, intractable, tense, angry and stubborn, easily distracted and vague, anxious, afraid, in need of reassurance and emotionally fragile; waking up frequently, and sleeping late.

On the second and third day of this seminar we will learn about children tuina. It is significantly different from "adults" tuina and therefore requires specialist training and knowledge. But, since the main techniques are few and relatively simple, it can be learned fairly easily both by tuina practitioners and by acupuncturists.

Patterns related to shen and hyperactivity will be discussed at great extent. The following aspects will be covered:

  • Physiology, aetiology, semiotics, and pathogenesis in children
  • Localization and function of specific points, lines, and areas in children
  • Specific techniques of paediatric tuina
  • Diagnosis of the clinical pattern of the most common disorders (winter respiratory diseases, poor appetite, fever, gastrointestinal disorders, sleep troubles, hyperactivity, retarded psycho-physical development)
  • Use of guasha, moxibustion, plum-blossom needle
  • Discussion and choice of treatment sequences
  • Discussion of case histories or direct treatment of little patients
  • Training on how to teach the sequences to parents

It is in principle possible to book the second and third day only if someone is solely interested in the tuina section. Please contact us for further information!
