Introduction o Introduce the concepts and roles of the HP-UX kernel o Introduce the major kernel data structures to be covered in the class o Introduce the kernel debugging tools used to explore these structures Process Management o Start by defining programs, processes and threads o Describe the different threading models o Examine the systems calls that make up the life cycle of processes, from a process management prospective o Describe the context switching a state saving mechanisms o Examine the system call gateway o Describe the states and substates of processes and threads Filesystems o Introduce the original Bell labs filesystem as a way of introducing filesystem concepts and problems o Briefly describe the operation of the HFS filesystem o Describe the major disk structures used by the Veritas filesystem o Explore the kernel data structures used in file access and filesystem management o Cover the upper layer, filesystem independent structures o The vnode/vfs layer o The Filesystem-dependent structures for both HFS and VxFS Volume management o Describe the operation of the Logical Volume Manager o Its overall architectures o The disc based structures o The kernel based datastructures System Initialization o For both PA-RISC and Itanium servers, cover the different phases of system startup o Firmware layers (PAL, SAL & EFI for IPF, PDC & BCH for PA-RISC) o Operating systems loaders and secondary loaders o Early kernel initialization o Later initialization phases o Building and initializing major data structures o Mapping IO drivers and devices System architecture o Describe the Itanium product line, with particular focus on the memory management and caching components. o Briefly describe the characteristics of PA-RISC o Describe the Itanium product line, with particular focus on the memory management and caching components. o Describe the interrupt handling mechanism of the processors Multiprocessor Systems o Explore the need for multiprocessor environments, what they provide and what they do not o Describe the major data structures involved in managing the MP environment o Explain the different possible contention situations and the way in which the kernel avoids them: Locking, Spin locks, Semaphores Interprocess Communications o Look at the implementation and data structures used for o Signals o System V IPC (semaphores, message queues and shared memory) o POSIX IPC Memory management o Describe the mechanisms to translate between virtual and physical addresses o Examine the hardware independent management of the physical memory resources of the system including the free space o Explore the kernel data structures involved in managing a processes address space o Describe the operation of the process management system calls from a memory management perspective The IO Subsystem o Describe the addressing of IO devices o Compare the modes of IO operation: direct IO, DMA o Describe IO system call flow o Describe the use of the device switch tables o Examine the General IO environment and context dependent IO modules o Explore the major IO related data structures o Describe the changes in the 11i v3 mass storage stack Kernel Services o Describe how user programs access kernel functions o Describe the callout service
